How to Write an ACT Essay: Step-by-Step Example

Each body paragraph should be organized around a single point or example you're using to support your argument – like a mini-essay within itself. The first sentence should make a claim that argues for just one portion of your thesis that you will develop in detail. In the next sentence or two, offer some kind of evidence for this claim: a concrete example. The rest of the paragraph should explain how the evidence brought forth proves the claim sentence. For example: See how clear this paragraph is? How easy it is to follow? This is exactly the kind of body paragraph that will help you develop a really strong, specific essay.

As you review the other differences between the two tests, keep your time-management skills in mind. Write several practice essays for each test and gauge how well you are able to marshal your arguments in a timely manner.

You do not need four sentences explaining the plot of the book you’re using as an example. Combine it all into one clean-cut sentence. Characters can be introduced in the topic sentence. Do not embellish your essay with superfluous SAT vocabulary words; they will seem out of place. I suggest taking 22 minutes to write your essay, and use the extra three minutes to proofread and make sure you have at least five SAT words in your essay.
